My Personal Expertise
Many of my abilities lie in the range of the right brain. I am a proficient reader and writer. The evidence is in my SAT scores as well as in my English and Social Studies grades. I can make reading interesting for myself by using various techniques to bring the material to life. I had a hard time reading at first and then as I became more interested in the material my imagination ran away with the plot and details, creating an interesting way of reading for me. I can also put it in reverse and do the opposite with my writing. I can take my opinions and my facts that I have and make them come together interestingly in the body of my essays. A skill that I have developed through prior experiences with writing essays and poems. I use my talents mostly for help in school as well, to help advance my academics.
My ability to read quickly and thoroughly was not discovered at first when I first started to read. When I first started to read I was very far behind my class with little hope of improvement. I was never really interested in the books that my mother or my teachers tried to get me to read, despite the variety that they provided me with. That is until my mother presented me with one of her old-time favorites,
Nancy Drew. I immediately took to the series, ignoring the fact that they were way beyond what my supposed reading level was. It turned out it was not the fact that I apparently could not comprehend the books that kept me from reading, it was my disinterest. When I read the Nancy Drew books I remembered the plots years later, and if not I only had/ have to read a few pages (in various locations) to recall the entire character list, plot, and setting; proving the depth of my interest and understanding in the series. The only disadvantage is that it becomes difficult to be interested in rereading the books, to add to that fact I also read the series with great speed, as to create the conundrum that was “what do I read next.” Sometimes when I am reading I forget that I am actually reading written words, as my brain transforms the words into a picture, due to my active imagination. With great novels, that have detailed imagery, I can create a movie in my mind, and since I have a well developed visually stimulated memory I can recall plots and other such details from the movie I create. However, this means that while recording visual stimuli well I cannot recall spoken words or written words as well as movies, or the movies my mind creates.
In addition to being able to read quickly and thoroughly, I can also write opinion essays, the body paragraphs, quickly and interestingly. When in high school it was required to write many research essays and informational articles. This lead to my acquirement of many facts, and having read much research in a variety of formats and areas, I began to develop my own ideas and opinions. I also learned how to learn about topics, and to be well informed before declaring your belief, and how to form an educated opinion. Now to write my own papers I base the primary statements on prior knowledge, and my judgments on this information, and I use the techniques I previously acquired to write the papers. I believe that my knowledge of how to write body paragraphs comes from my ability to write poems, having two published. The way I write my poems sometimes shows in the way I write essays. I like to think of the story, or information, as a whole figure out where I am going with it and then fill in the gaps between the facts or my opinions with support. My teachers really helped me hone this skill by helping to revise and edit the paragraphs, as well as teaching me to do the same. They also really helped me with introductory paragraphs and conclusions, as this is a weak spot of mine.
My mother and teachers have had a huge impact on my life, my interests, and my talents. My mother in particular always fostered the idea of learning by experience, to read and to analyze, to use an individual’s interests to engage them in other activities. As such she and my teachers were able to get me to read more, and to broaden my horizons. My mother, as well as my teachers, helped me to read, comprehend, and memorize to the best of my ability by exposing me to all different types of material and getting me access to material that would interest me. They also helped my comprehension by giving me texts that would make me think and have me reflect upon what I was reading. Teachers helped me to speak my mind and be persuasive; they always helped me to be less connected with my work, and to always remember that one person can never please everyone. My mother and teachers also made it a constant fact that to mention that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, including me. My teachers taught me to never give up and do it right the first time. My mother taught me that if you are doing your best you are succeeding even if you fail. This gave me the strength to try my hardest to express who I was and my opinions, even if it they were not an accepted cultural beliefs. Because people have introduced me to new ideas and have exposed me to different opinions that I have enjoyed and hated my ideas and opinions were formed, and introduced me to new ways of expressing those ideas. As my beliefs changed and grew I spent more time on different activities, and learned more about myself, and discovered new abilities that I had never considered before.
My skills of reading quickly and thoroughly, as well as the ability to write have helped me dramatically with school. in my classes it becomes second nature that when I read I can create a visual of the information to remember it, not only for exams and class but also for future reference. this helps me to write opinion essays later using prior knowledge learned during school and while reading other recreational materials. Writing many research papers in high school has also helped me to develop ways of expressing myself and also helped me to comprehend the materials I read and use for other works. my skills come in handy while I am in school, not to mention the fact that it makes learning very fun for me.
